What “Third-Party Tested” Actually Means on a Protein Label — and What It Doesn’t

“Third-party tested” appears on almost every tub of protein sold in North America. It sounds like a guarantee. Usually, it means something much smaller: the ingredient supplier sent a certificate of analysis along with the shipment, and the brand kept it on file.
A supplier certificate is a reasonable starting point. But it is the supplier’s own paperwork, describing the supplier’s own product. If “clean” is a conclusion you are supposed to reach from evidence, it is worth asking any brand — including ours — the harder question: how do you actually know?

Level one: supplier documentation
For our plant line, the pea protein isolate (Nutralys®, made from Canadian-grown yellow peas in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) arrives with a stack of supplier documentation: water-only extraction with no hexane or synthetic solvents, non-GMO status, gluten controlled below the international gluten-free threshold, no animal ingredients, no irradiation, no ethylene oxide — backed by FSSC 22000 and ISO certifications and a formal traceability program.
For our whey line, the WPC-80 carries supplier documentation covering its single-ingredient composition (whey protein concentrate, 100%), non-GMO and gluten-free status, Halal and Kosher Dairy certification, and dairy sourcing from milk produced without added growth hormones (rBST/rBGH).
Every one of those claims traces to a document, not a slogan. But notice what this level actually establishes: identity, composition, and process — for the ingredient, as it left the supplier.
Where most “transparency” quietly stops
Supplier documents describe the ingredient as it arrives. They do not automatically describe the finished product you buy, because ingredients are then blended — with amino acids, cocoa, vanilla, coconut sugar — and blending can change a finished product’s profile. Most supplier specifications also aren’t designed to report heavy-metal content at all.
For most brands, the paper trail ends here. The supplier certificate gets summarized as “third-party tested,” and no one ever tests the product that actually goes in the bag.
Level two: testing we commission ourselves
This is the part we decided to do differently. Samples from every incoming ingredient lot — and every finished production lot after blending — are submitted to the University of Guelph’s Agriculture and Food Laboratory, an independent laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, and analyzed for four heavy metals: lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury.
We choose the sample and we pay for the testing. We do not run the test, and we cannot change what comes back.
An honest caveat — and our answer to it
There is another kind of testing, where someone buys a product off a retail shelf anonymously and tests it. That is a real difference from what we do. We select the samples we submit — so in principle, you are taking our word that we did not pick a flattering one.
Our answer is structural. We do not test some lots; we test every lot. A lot that fails never becomes product. And every lot that ships has its report published and linked to the lot number on the bag — so if you are holding one of our products, a number exists for it. Cherry-picking only works if you are allowed to skip the lots you don’t like.
The standard: pass or fail against Proposition 65
A lab result is only meaningful against a standard. We calculate the expected exposure at our actual serving size and compare it with California’s Proposition 65 safe-harbour levels — among the most conservative thresholds in North America. Nothing requires a Canadian food company to use them. We chose them because we wanted a hard line rather than a judgement call.
For our quality program it is pass or fail: over the relevant level, the lot is not used. At or under it, the lot passes this step — and still has to meet every other requirement before release.
Those thresholds are widely quoted and widely misunderstood — there are two different Proposition 65 numbers for lead, thirty-fold apart. We unpack what they actually measure in Heavy Metals in Protein Powder: What the Numbers Actually Mean.
Why we won’t say “heavy-metal free”
No laboratory can prove absolute zero. Metals like lead and cadmium occur naturally in soil and water, which is why they appear in ordinary foods — and why independent surveys keep finding them in protein powders. The Clean Label Project’s 2024–25 category report tested 160 top-selling products and found 47% exceeded a Proposition 65 safety threshold for toxic metals — rising to 65% among chocolate-flavoured powders, because cacao is a natural accumulator of cadmium and lead.
That last number is why we treat our own Double Cocoa as the formula deserving the most scrutiny: cocoa is tested on the way in like everything else, and we deliberately kept its inclusion rate conservative to leave margin against those thresholds. When its lot report publishes, you will see the measured numbers rather than our assurances.
And one more piece of honesty about lab reports: when a result says “not detected,” it means the amount was below what that method can reliably measure — not that absolutely none was present. A laboratory result is a measured number, not a promise of zero. That is exactly why we publish the number.
Five questions that test any brand’s “tested” claim
You can apply this to anyone — including us:
- Who paid for the test, and who ran it? A supplier certificate and independently commissioned testing are different things. Ask which one the claim rests on.
- Ingredient or finished product? Testing the raw ingredient is not the same as testing the blended product you actually consume.
- Every lot, or one flattering sample? A single good result proves that one sample. Per-lot testing with published reports is much harder to cherry-pick.
- Against what standard? “Passed testing” means nothing without knowing the threshold. Ask for the standard — and whether it was chosen or required.
- Can you see the actual report? If the answer is no, the claim is asking for faith, not offering evidence.
