In industrial processing, the leaf is stripped with solvents, fibers are removed, and polyphenols disappear. What remains is no longer whole food, but a highly concentrated compound engineered for sweetness, not biology.
When consumed, these molecules reach the colon largely untouched. Gut bacteria don’t recognize them, the intestinal barrier may be disrupted, and signals meant to stay in the gut can spread system-wide — affecting blood sugar regulation, inflammation, mood, and metabolism.

The Hidden Science of “Natural” Sweeteners
People often assume natural sweeteners like stevia are harmless, but the reality is, the long-term science is still evolving. Most studies focus on which gut bacteria are present, not what those microbes are actually doing or how they influence human physiology. Emerging research suggests these compounds can interact with the microbiome and impact metabolic signaling, particularly in individuals with already sensitive systems. Until stronger long-term human data is available, we take a cautious, science-based approach—choosing not to include these sweeteners in our formulations.
