Most supplement brands tell you what’s in the tub. We’d rather show you where our line is — and that we hold it even when it costs us.

TLC PureOrigin makes two protein lines: TLC PureProtein 80™, a whey protein concentrate, and TLC PurePlant Protein™, a fortified pea protein. Both are built on one principle: the science comes first, and the marketing only after the science is right. Here is what that means in practice — for both.

Our Raw-to-Finished Batch Verification Process

Each TLC production lot follows our Raw-to-Finished Batch Verification Process. Raw ingredients undergo documented verification and third-party testing before production. After final blending, the finished product is independently tested against the applicable heavy-metal and microbiological specifications before release — because fortifying and blending can change a finished product’s profile. Our early ingredients were screened for heavy metals at the University of Guelph, and we evaluate each serving against California’s Proposition 65 safe-harbour levels — among the most conservative thresholds in North America. Once testing is complete, the lot-specific report is published on our Batch Quality & Reports page and connected to the lot number through the package QR code.

We do not make an unprovable “heavy-metal free” promise. Trace elements occur naturally in soil, water and feed, and any laboratory result depends on the detection limit of the method used. When a report reads “not detected,” it means the amount was below what that method can measure reliably — not that none was present. So we publish the measured numbers instead of a promise. Why WPC-80 — and Why We Accept the Clumps

At TLC PureOrigin™, we believe the quality of a whey protein is determined by more than the percentage printed on the label. It begins with the source, how the whey is processed, what is preserved — and what isn't added.

Our WPC-80 begins with fresh, cheese-derived sweet whey, gently processed using low-temperature cold microfiltration to preserve whey's naturally occurring protein structure. The result is a single-ingredient powder, whey protein concentrate, 100%, with a full balance of undenatured bioactive whey proteins.

We deliberately choose a non-instantized WPC80 ingredient without added lecithin or anti-caking agents.

Instantizing improves how a powder wets and disperses. It commonly involves agglomeration and may include an emulsifier such as soy or sunflower lecithin. The term alone does not establish which additives are present; check the ingredient information or ask the manufacturer.

Research on soy lecithin has identified changes in microbial metabolites, but the clinical significance remains uncertain. These findings do not establish that lecithin damages the gut. Read the human trial (Wellens et al., 2026).

Because added lecithin is not necessary for our formulation, we choose to leave it out while the evidence develops. This is a precautionary formulation choice—not a claim that lecithin-free protein has proven superior gut-health outcomes.

That choice comes with a small tradeoff.

Without an added emulsifier to improve dispersibility, our protein may require a little more shaking, stirring, or blending. And yes — you may occasionally find a few small clumps.

We accept that tradeoff intentionally.

Our priority is to preserve the character of the whey itself rather than engineer it for perfect instant solubility.

Compared with highly refined isolates, WPC-80 retains more of the naturally occurring complexity of the original whey matrix, including residual milk lipids and the full range of whey protein fractions — alpha-lactalbumin, beta-lactoglobulin, immunoglobulins, and glycomacropeptide (GMP), which typically makes up close to a quarter of the total protein. GMP is particularly interesting because of where it comes from: it is released during cheesemaking itself, which means it appears naturally in cheese-derived sweet whey and is largely absent from whey made other ways. Researchers continue to investigate its potential role in supporting beneficial gut bacteria and a healthy intestinal environment — we'll be honest with you: that research is still mostly at the laboratory and animal stage. It's one of the reasons we find this ingredient worth preserving, not a health benefit we're claiming.

What the documentation does establish is protein quality. Our WPC-80 scores a PDCAAS of 1.0 — the highest score a protein can receive on the standard scale used to rate protein quality. Each serving delivers about 27 g of complete protein and approximately 2.6 g of leucine, in the range associated with a robust muscle-protein-synthesis response, with the rapid amino-acid delivery whey is known for.

One thing to know: WPC-80 is a concentrate, not a lactose-free isolate. Each serving contains roughly 3 g of naturally occurring lactose — a measured number you'll find reflected in the sugars line of the nutrition panel, not a claim you have to take on trust.

We also require our whey to meet strict standards for ingredient identity, microbiological quality, non-GMO status, and dairy sourcing — including milk produced without added growth hormones (rBST/rBGH), supported by supplier documentation. These supplier documents are reviewed before a lot enters production. Separately, the finished blend is tested for heavy metals and microbiological contaminants by an independent laboratory after it is made.

For us, the goal isn't to push protein toward an extreme simply to achieve a higher number or a smoother first shake. It's to preserve what makes whey valuable in the first place: a complete, functional protein, treated with restraint.

A perfectly smooth shake is convenient.

But convenience shouldn't dictate the ingredient.

The practical trade-off is that some clumping may occur, and more vigorous shaking, blending or a brief rest may be needed. Clumping alone is not proof of purity or a gut-health benefit, and easy mixing is not proof that another product contains lecithin.

Why there’s no “natural flavour”

“Natural flavour” is a legal term, not an ingredient. It can carry solvents, carriers and fillers — maltodextrin is a common one — behind two words, and the label never has to spell them out. We don’t use it in either line.

Our Heritage Vanilla is real vanilla, fully declared: an alcohol-free vanilla extract (vegetable glycerin and water) on acacia fibre — a prebiotic, not maltodextrin — plus ground whole vanilla bean with seeds, and Ceylon cinnamon. Our Double Cocoa is Dutch-processed cocoa with organic coconut sugar. No artificial flavours, no engineered flavour systems, no non-nutritive sweeteners. We removed rice instead of blending around it

Our first plant formula paired pea with rice to complete the amino acid profile. But rice is the plant kingdom’s most efficient accumulator of inorganic arsenic, and it shows highest for arsenic in national food surveys. Completeness by design, not by accident

Pea protein is rich in lysine but short on the sulfur amino acids, methionine and cysteine. Rather than add a second grain, we correct pea’s limiting amino acid directly with L-methionine, and we add L-leucine to reach roughly 2.5 g per serving — an amount associated with a robust muscle-protein-synthesis response. We’re candid about the evidence here: the methionine correction is well established, and the leucine-fortification approach is well supported in human trials on fortified plant proteins, though direct research on this exact combination is still limited. Clean label, defined

Across both lines: no artificial flavours, no generic “natural flavours,” no thickening gums, no emulsifiers, no anti-caking agents, and no non-nutritive sweeteners — no sucralose, no aspartame, no stevia, no monk fruit. Where sweetness appears, it is organic coconut sugar, declared by weight on the panel like any other ingredient. Nothing is added solely to make the powder mix faster or taste louder. What’s on the label is what’s in the tub.

Where our ingredients come from

Whey. TLC PureProtein 80™ is made in Canada from domestic and imported ingredients, sourced from multiple vetted dairy regions. We don’t believe purity comes from geography alone — it comes from data, verification and consistency. That is why we don’t rely solely on supplier documentation, and why every lot is tested regardless of where the ingredient originated.

Pea. Our peas are Canadian-grown yellow peas. The pea protein isolate (Nutralys®) is produced in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, using water as the only solvent — no hexane or synthetic solvents. From there the isolate is supplied to us, and the finished product is blended at a certified Canadian facility, where the methionine, leucine, and any flavours are added. It’s a short, traceable chain from field to finished tub.

Documented, not just claimed

Whey. Our WPC-80 is backed by supplier documentation covering a single-ingredient composition (whey protein concentrate, 100%), a milk-only allergen statement, certified USA origin, non-GMO status, Halal and Kosher Dairy certification, gluten-free status, and dairy sourcing from milk produced without added growth hormones (rBST/rBGH) — along with defined protein, fat, ash, moisture and microbiological limits. Documentation like this establishes identity, composition and microbiological safety. It is not designed to report heavy-metal content, which is exactly why we commission our own testing.

Pea. The clean-label claims we make about the pea protein isolate are backed by supplier documentation — including statements confirming water-only extraction (no residual solvents), non-GMO status, gluten and allergen controls, vegan suitability, and that the isolate is not expected to contain California Proposition 65-listed heavy metals at labeling levels — along with FSSC 22000 and ISO 9001/14001 certification and full traceability.

Honest about the science

We read the research before we make a claim, and we tell you when the evidence is limited, mixed, or preliminary rather than dressing it up. That is the standard. It doesn’t move.
