The Clean Protein Myth: What Is Really Hiding in Your Protein Powder?

Most protein powders advertise themselves as clean. The word appears on labels, websites, and social media as if its meaning were obvious.
But “clean” is not a scientific standard. It does not automatically tell you how a product was formulated, how well you will tolerate it, or how its complete ingredient list may interact with your digestive system.
That distinction matters because protein powder is rarely just protein. Many formulas also contain non-nutritive sweeteners, emulsifiers, gums, flavouring systems, and other ingredients used to improve sweetness, texture, shelf stability, and mixability.
The right question is therefore not simply, “Is this protein powder clean?”
It is: What is actually in it, and what does the evidence say about those ingredients?
Why I Started Looking Beyond the Front of the Label
I have worked as a clinician for more than 25 years, and my postgraduate work in neuroscience and psychology focused heavily on the gut-brain axis.
While reviewing research on the microbiome, inflammation, metabolism, anxiety, and depression, I kept encountering the same important idea: the gut does not operate in isolation.
The intestinal microbiome interacts with the immune system, metabolism, the intestinal barrier, and signalling pathways that connect the gut and brain. These relationships are complex, and the science is still developing. The microbiome does not single-handedly determine mood, recovery, or metabolic health, but it may help shape the physiological environment in which those processes occur.
That led me to take a closer look at a product I had been using for years: my own protein powder.
I turned the container around and read the full ingredient list.
There was the protein—but there were also sweeteners, flavouring ingredients, and emulsifiers. Ingredients that had seemed incidental suddenly deserved a closer look.
“Clean” Is a Marketing Term, Not a Complete Ingredient Review
A short list of familiar-sounding claims on the front of a container can create a health halo. Words such as natural, zero sugar, low calorie, and clean may be useful clues, but they do not replace the ingredient panel.
This does not mean every additive is harmful, or that every person will react in the same way. It also does not mean that “natural flavours” are automatically disruptive. That term covers many different substances, and a label alone cannot tell us their physiological effects.
What the emerging research does suggest is that specific additives should not all be treated as biologically interchangeable or automatically inert.
What the Research Says About Non-Nutritive Sweeteners
Evidence concerning non-nutritive sweeteners is mixed and highly specific to the sweetener, dose, study design, and individual.
In a 2022 randomized controlled trial involving 120 healthy adults, researchers studied saccharin, sucralose, aspartame, and stevia at doses below their acceptable daily intake. Each sweetener produced distinct effects on the microbiome and metabolome. Saccharin and sucralose also impaired glycemic responses in that study, while the responses varied substantially among individuals.
That finding does not prove that every non-nutritive sweetener harms every person. It does challenge the assumption that all such sweeteners are metabolically inert and affect everyone in the same way.
For consumers, the practical lesson is simple: look at the specific sweetener, the amount and frequency you consume, and your own tolerance rather than relying only on a “zero sugar” claim.
What About Emulsifiers?
Emulsifiers help powders disperse smoothly and give processed foods a consistent texture. This is a broad ingredient category, and the evidence for one emulsifier should not automatically be applied to all others.
Still, certain emulsifiers have raised legitimate research questions.
A small, controlled human feeding study examined carboxymethylcellulose, also known as cellulose gum. Compared with an emulsifier-free control diet, high intake of carboxymethylcellulose altered participants’ gut-microbiota composition and metabolome and modestly increased abdominal discomfort. The trial included only 16 people and used a specific dose for 11 days, so its results should be interpreted as an important signal—not a final verdict on all emulsifiers.
Animal and laboratory research has also found that some emulsifiers can affect the mucus layer and microbial environment. Human evidence remains more limited, and different emulsifiers may have different effects.
The careful conclusion is not “all emulsifiers are toxic.” It is that consumers deserve transparent formulations and that ingredient-specific human research should continue.

How to Read a Protein-Powder Label More Critically
When comparing products, look beyond protein grams and front-label claims. Ask:

What is the primary protein source?
Does it provide a complete amino-acid profile appropriate for your goals? -
What sweeteners are used?
Consider the specific ingredient, your frequency of use, and your digestive response. -
Are emulsifiers, gums, or thickeners included?
Their presence is not automatic proof of harm, but it is worth knowing what you consume regularly. -
How long is the ingredient list?
A longer list is not inherently bad, but every ingredient should have a clear purpose. -
How do you feel after using it?
Persistent bloating, cramping, diarrhea, constipation, or other symptoms deserve attention. -
Does the company provide transparent quality information?
Look for clear sourcing, manufacturing standards, batch testing, and accessible answers to formulation questions.
Why We Chose a Simpler Formulation
This research changed how our family thought about protein formulation.
We wanted to build TLC PureOrigin around a straightforward principle: begin with high-quality protein and avoid adding sweeteners or emulsifiers simply to manufacture a stronger flavour or texture experience.
That choice is not a claim that one product can treat the microbiome, prevent disease, or guarantee better brain or metabolic health. It is a commitment to formulation transparency and to removing ingredients we do not believe are necessary for the product we want to make.
For us, the next generation of “clean” is not a louder badge on the front of a container.
It is a shorter distance between what the label promises and what the formula actually contains.
The Bottom Line
Protein quality matters. So do training, total diet, sleep, energy intake, and recovery.
But if protein powder is part of your daily routine, the rest of the ingredient list matters too. Emerging evidence suggests that some non-nutritive sweeteners and emulsifiers can affect the human microbiome or metabolic response under certain conditions, although effects vary and many questions remain unanswered.
Do not let one word, clean, make the decision for you.
Turn the container around. Read the complete label. Ask better questions. Choose the formulation that fits your goals, values, and tolerance.
