We Couldn't Buy a Clean Vanilla. So We Build Our Own.

Most of what goes wrong with a “clean” protein happens in the parts you never think about. Not the protein. The flavour.
When we set our flavour standard, the rule was simple: no maltodextrin, no alcohol carrier, no vague “natural flavour” standing in for a list of undeclared bulking agents. Everything on the label, nothing hidden. That is easy to say. Then you go to actually buy the ingredient, and the standard runs into the supply chain.
Here is what we found. A powdered vanilla flavour almost always shows up one of two ways. It is carried on maltodextrin — the cheap, shelf-stable bulking agent that does the exact job we are trying to avoid — or it is an alcohol-based extract. The clean version we wanted — alcohol-free, maltodextrin-free, every carrier declared — is not sold as a finished powder at the volumes we produce. We looked. It does not exist off the shelf.
So we had two choices: compromise the standard to fit what is for sale, or build the flavour ourselves.
We build it ourselves.
What “building it” actually means
Let us be precise, because this is where brands oversell and lose people. We did not invent vanilla. We did not synthesize anything or manufacture an extract from raw beans in a lab. What we did is real, ordinary, and harder than it sounds: we took clean ingredients that do exist and engineered them into a stable dry powder that does not.
We start with an alcohol-free vanilla extract — whole vanilla pods infused in water and food-grade glycerine (palm-free), and nothing else. No maltodextrin, no ethanol, no “natural flavour” catch-all standing in for undeclared carriers. That word “glycerine” matters, because it gets confused with a different family of additives. Glycerine (glycerol) is a small plant-derived humectant and solvent, benign at food doses. It is not an emulsifier. The emulsifiers people worry about — mono- and diglycerides, glyceryl stearate — are glycerol with fatty acids attached, a different molecule that behaves like a detergent in the gut. Our extract’s carrier is the plain, benign kind. No fatty-acid tail, no surfactant behaviour. Then comes the actual formulation problem: a liquid extract is not a powder, and you cannot just pour it into a dry protein blend. It needs a carrier to become a stable, even powder — and the carrier itself has to meet the standard. We use acacia fibre, a prebiotic plant fibre, instead of maltodextrin. Getting a liquid to hold on that carrier as a clean, consistent powder took work: the right proportions, and a drying step we tuned ourselves until the result was stable batch to batch. We will keep the exact recipe to ourselves — that part is ours — but that is the shape of it.
The result is a vanilla flavour system we assemble in-house, from clean parts, to a standard the market does not sell. And because it is not something we can order, we still make it ourselves, every batch, at the volumes we need.
Why bother
It would be easier and cheaper to buy the maltodextrin-carried version, print “natural vanilla flavour,” and move on. Almost everyone does. The reason we do not is the same reason we removed rice when it tested high for arsenic, and the same reason we test every finished lot rather than trusting a supplier sheet: the standard does not move to fit what is convenient. When the ingredient we needed did not exist, “lower the standard” was not on the table. “Build it” was.
That is the whole philosophy in one small, unglamorous ingredient. You will never taste the effort. You will just taste vanilla — real ground bean, a clean extract, on a prebiotic fibre — with nothing hidden behind the word “flavour.” It is the flavour system inside our Heritage Vanilla Bean Spice Whey Protein.
