Why We Skip Non-Nutritive Sweeteners — and Use a Little Real Sugar Instead

Most "clean" protein and wellness products get their sweetness from a non-nutritive sweetener — stevia, monk fruit, sucralose, something zero-calorie. We don't. We use a small amount of real sugar instead. Here's the honest reason, not the marketing one.

For decades these sweeteners were treated as biologically inert: no calories, no blood-sugar spike, no effect worth worrying about. Microbiome research has made that assumption hard to defend. In the strongest human trial to date — a randomized controlled study — saccharin and sucralose measurably changed people's blood-sugar response, and the effect was carried by their gut bacteria. When researchers transplanted those bacteria into germ-free mice, the mice developed the same glucose problem. That's not a correlation. That's a mechanism.

I want to be just as clear about what the evidence does not say. It does not say stevia or monk fruit are harmful. For the plant-derived sweeteners the human data are genuinely mixed — some studies show shifts in how gut bacteria function, others show no change in diversity or short-chain fatty acids over weeks of daily use. The regulators who reviewed stevia found it safe within intake limits. Anyone telling you "natural" sweeteners are proven dangerous is overstating the science, and I won't do that to sell a product.

So why leave them out?

Because "not proven harmful" is not the same as "proven safe over a lifetime." The studies that would catch slow, subtle effects on the gut lining, the microbial community, and metabolic signaling — measured over years, in people who already carry metabolic or gut issues — mostly haven't been done. The safety approvals these ingredients carry were built on acute-toxicity testing, not decades of microbiome outcomes. That's a real gap, and it's honest to say so out loud.

Our standard is simple: do no harm, and don't ask the customer to be the long-term experiment. If an ingredient isn't nutritionally necessary, and its long-term effect on the microbiome is still an open question, we leave it out. That's precaution under uncertainty — not fear, and not a claim that the alternative is poison.

That principle is why TLC PureOrigin is built the way it is. We do sweeten — with a small amount of organic coconut sugar, a real, whole-food sugar, about three grams per serving in the flavored blends and none in the unflavored. What we don't use is any non-caloric sweetener whose long-term effect on the gut is still an open question. No stevia, no monk fruit, no sucralose, no synthetic emulsifiers. It's a deliberate tradeoff: a few grams of a sugar we understand instead of a zero-calorie ingredient we don't. I'm not going to tell you coconut sugar is a health food — it's sugar, used sparingly. The point is that the uncertainty this article is about belongs to the non-nutritive sweeteners, and that's the uncertainty we chose to keep out of your daily scoop.
