What Are You Really Paying For in a Protein Powder?

Let's start with the uncomfortable question, because you're already asking it: why does a bag of TLC PureOrigin™ protein cost CA$129.99?
Fair question. And the honest answer starts with a different one: what are you actually comparing when you compare protein powders? Because the number on the bag — any bag, ours or anyone's — is close to meaningless on its own.
Why the bag price is the wrong number
Protein powders are sold in wildly different container sizes with wildly different serving sizes. A "2-lb tub" is 907 g. Our whey bag is 1.2 kg. One brand's serving is a 30 g scoop with 21 g of protein; ours is a 40 g serving with 27 g (flavoured) or 32 g (unflavoured). Two products with the same sticker price can differ by 40% or more in what you actually take home.
So the sticker price answers the wrong question. Here are the two numbers that answer the right one — and you can calculate both in the supplement aisle with your phone.
Two numbers that actually compare products
1. Price per serving = bag price ÷ number of servings.
2. Price per gram of protein = price per serving ÷ grams of protein per serving. This is the sharper tool, because it corrects for brands that quietly shrink the scoop.
Here is the math run honestly on our own products and two typical market profiles — no competitor names, because prices change; check today's numbers yourself, that's the point.

Two things jump out of that table, and we're going to say both of them plainly.
First: against other premium proteins, our price holds up better than the sticker suggests. Per gram of protein, our unflavoured whey costs less than many products at the same or lower bag price, because our bag is bigger and our servings carry more protein.
Second — and here is the part a marketing department would cut — the budget tub wins the per-gram race. Commodity whey is cheaper per gram of protein than ours. If cost per gram of protein is the only thing you're optimizing, a budget tub is the rational purchase, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.
One adjustment the table doesn't show: a monthly subscription lowers every TLC figure above by 10% — to roughly 12.2¢ per gram on our unflavoured whey, 14.4¢ flavoured, 11.2¢ on unflavoured plant and 13.5¢ on flavoured plant.
All figures here are in Canadian dollars. If you are shopping from the United States, our store shows you US pricing converted from Canadian dollars, so your per-gram cost will land close to these figures but not identical — the method is what travels: price ÷ (servings × grams of protein per serving).
So why does anyone pay more? Because per-gram math measures the protein. It measures nothing else in the scoop — and nothing about what stands behind it.
Not every gram is the same gram
Per-gram math also assumes every gram of protein does the same work. It doesn't — and this matters most for plant protein.
Whey is a naturally complete, highly digestible protein: it scores a PDCAAS of 1.0, the top of the standard scale for protein quality, and it is naturally rich in leucine — the amino acid most closely associated with a robust muscle-protein-synthesis response. To be honest once again: a budget whey is leucine-rich too. That's whey.
Pea is different. Pea protein contains all nine essential amino acids, but methionine is its limiting amino acid — present, just low — and unfortified pea typically carries only around 2 g of leucine in a 24 g serving. That means a cheap pea powder that looks like a bargain per gram may need roughly a third more powder per shake to deliver the leucine a serving of whey provides — which quietly erodes its price advantage, scoop by scoop.

Price it at your dose, not the label's
One more thing the sticker price can't know: how much protein you actually need per meal. Our education articles review why the effective per-meal amount shifts with age and training — roughly 20–25 g of high-quality protein for most younger adults, rising toward 30–40 g for older adults as anabolic resistance develops, and potentially higher during recovery periods, with professional guidance.
That changes the value math completely. If your target is 32 g per meal, our Unflavoured whey gets you there in one serving. A product with 21 g per scoop needs about a serving and a half — so its real cost at your dose is roughly 50% more than its per-serving price suggests, and the tub empties faster too. Before comparing prices, find your own target with the TLC Precision Dosing System, then price every product at that dose.
What the per-gram math can't tell you
What else is in the scoop. Protein powders differ most in everything that isn't protein: artificial and non-nutritive sweeteners, thickening gums, emulsifiers, anti-caking agents, and "natural flavour" systems that can carry maltodextrin and undeclared carriers behind two words on the label. Our formulas contain none of those — every ingredient is named on the panel. In our Unflavoured whey, 32 g of a 40 g serving is protein: 80% of the scoop. In Double Cocoa, the other third of the scoop is cocoa, organic coconut sugar and two salts — all declared, nothing hidden. When you compare scoops, ask what the non-protein portion actually is.
What's verified, versus claimed. "Third-party tested" on a label usually means the ingredient supplier provided a certificate. That's a starting point, not a finish line — we've written about what "third-party tested" actually means and doesn't. Raw ingredients are independently tested before production, the finished blend is independently tested again before release — including screening for heavy metals — and the lot-specific report is published and connected to your bag through its lot number and QR code. Independent laboratory testing of every lot costs real money per bag. It's in the price because we think it's the point.
What the formulation refuses to do. The cheapest way to flavour a vanilla protein is an engineered flavour system on maltodextrin with a high-intensity sweetener. We build our vanilla from ground vanilla bean and an alcohol-free extract on acacia fibre instead — we had to build it ourselves because the clean version isn't sold off the shelf. Restraint costs more than shortcuts. That difference lives in the price, not on the front label.
The honest conclusion
A high price does not prove quality. Neither does a low one prove a product is bad — a budget whey with a supplier certificate is a legitimate choice for someone optimizing purely for cost. Price proves nothing in either direction. Documentation does. Specifications you can read, ingredients that are all named, and lot-level laboratory reports you can pull up for the exact bag in your hands — that's the evidence a price can't fake, at any price point.
A checklist to take shopping
- Compute price per serving, then price per gram of protein — for every product, including ours.
- Check grams of leucine per serving — especially for plant proteins, where unfortified products may need extra scoops to do the same job.
- Know your own per-meal target first, and price every product at your dose — not the label's serving.
- Check how much of each scoop is actually protein, and what the rest is.
- Look for named ingredients only — no "natural flavours" umbrella, no unexplained gums or sweeteners.
- Ask what "third-party tested" covers: the ingredient or the finished product? One batch or every batch?
- Ask whether you can see the test report for your lot — not a generic quality page.
